Olentangy Local School District (Delaware County, Ohio)

The Olentangy Local School District is a large, rapidly growing school district centered in southern Delaware County, with a small, southern portion (one cul-de-sac) in Franklin County in the U.S. state of Ohio. The Olentangy Local School District comprises and serves students from all or parts of numerous municipalities, including the unincorporated community of Lewis Center and the cities of Columbus, Delaware, Powell, and Westerville. The district also serves students from Berkshire, Berlin, Concord, Genoa, Liberty, and Orange townships in Delaware and Franklin counties. As of 2011, it operates 15 elementary schools, five middle schools, and three high schools. Also, there is an online high school called OASIS for selected students at the OASIS headquarters.
Olentangy is the largest district in Delaware County. In 1998, the district had an enrollment of 4,812. The district ended the 2007/08 school year with 13,002 and is projected to add about 900 more students before the 2008/09 school year. According to projections, enrollment will increase to nearly 23,000 by the 2017/18 school year and the school district will become one of the ten largest districts in Ohio. By that time, the school district may have an additional three to five high schools. However, they are seeking alternative ways to educate the rapidly growing number of high school students without building additional schools. Several new schools have been planned, and will begin construction in several years to meet the rapidly rising population of southern Delaware County.
The 7.9 mill bond issue passed on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 and therefore made it possible for all co-curricular and extra-curricular activities to stay in the schools. Had the levy not passed, serious athletic,
extracurricular, co-curricular, and academic cuts would have been made.
The Olentangy district was designated "Excellent" Ohio Department of Education in the most recent (2009/10) ODE report card, meeting 30 of 30 indicators. However, the district also faces a lawsuit due to its decision to fire a teacher in 2015. 〔http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/ohio-teacher-fired-confronting-elementary-school-bully-article-1.2225476〕
